We’re back to zoom in on a specific watch model. In this video, we’re looking at the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Medium 77014. Unlike the the Rolex Lady-Datejust (the bestselling women’s watch on Chrono24), the Rolex Oyster Perpetual lacks a date display and is more budget-friendly. At 31 mm, this model is rather modest. However, its ribbed bezel instantly marks this watch as a Rolex Oyster, a popular choice of many prominent women.
Rolex hasn’t always catered to women: When the company was founded, wristwatches were still niche products that had yet to prove themselves on the market. The company initially focused on persuading men to wear this “new fashion.” Rolex made a breakthrough in the mid-1920s with the legendary water-resistant Oyster case and Perpetual automatic movement. The company later released the Datejust in 1943. The Lady-Datejust followed in its successful footsteps 12 years later. It was available in the typical sizes of 26 and 28 mm.
While it lacks a date and has a somewhat larger case, the Oyster Perpetual is no less attractive than the Datejust. It also came in a wider range of sizes, from 24 to 39 mm. Of course, the prestige associated with Rolex watches applies to all of these models. By modern standards, the 31-mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual almost functions as a conservative counter-trend. As the sales numbers show, more and more women now prefer case sizes of 36 mm or above, as found on the Explorer, Submariner, Daytona, and other models. Conversely, this Oyster Perpetual hearkens back to the classic watches of yore that blurred the line between watch and jewelry. Even though this timepiece is fighting against today’s watch trends, many women are still attracted to its pure elegance. That Hopefully means it won’t be disappearing any time soon.
