In this video series, we zoom in for a closer look at a specific watch. This time, we’re checking out one of the most iconic pilot’s watches there is: the IWC Big Pilot, ref. 5002-01. This 46-mm timepiece certainly makes a statement, but it also stands out with its widespread popularity and interesting history. Initially developed for the German Air Force in 1940, the IWC Big Pilot has been setting an example in the genre ever since. The very first IWC Big Pilot measured 55 mm across and was powered by the 52 T.S.C. pocket watch caliber.
From the very beginning, IWC faced fierce competition from other manufacturers in the German cities of Glashütte and Pforzheim. A. Lange & Söhne, Stowa, and Laco were all offering their own pilot’s watches, each of which prioritized functionality and readability – hallmarks of every pilot’s watch. Today, this type of timekeeper mostly serves a statement piece on the wrists of adventurous men. The Big Pilot is undoubtedly highly recognizable and boasts plenty of character, but is that enough to earn it the top spot among pilot’s watches?
