Great Watches Under $5,000
Hublot Classic Fusion Titanium Automatic
When you think of Hublot, the first thing that probably comes to mind is that the timepieces are pretty big and bulky. While this is true, luckily there are models in the brand’s line-up that are more sensibly sized. One such example is this watch from the Hublot Classic Fusion line. As the name suggests, Classic Fusion pieces are more elegant and perhaps not as loud as some of their Hublot siblings. They are simple in terms of design, but this is what makes them so appealing. This Hublot Classic Fusion, for example, has a trendy deep blue dial paired with a classy crocodile strap in a similar blue tone. The 42-mm titanium case is the perfect contemporary size, and together with the simple time-only dial, it creates an amazingly well-balanced timepiece.
Enthusiast’s Corner: Rare and Exceptional Timepieces
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked
There’s the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, and then there’s this watch. This timepiece clearly comes from the Royal Oak line, but instead of a slim, elegant “tapisserie” dial, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked gives us something totally different. The case remains undoubtedly a Royal Oak, but the dial is refreshingly unique: slate gray, skeletonized (or Openworked as AP calls it), applied hour indices, and the typical Royal Oak hands. Of course, the case is not steel like the original Royal Oak; the Double Balance Wheel Openworked comes with an 18-karat solid gold case and bracelet. While the watch is beautiful to look at, the true craftsmanship lies within the movement. The Audemars Piguet Manufacture Calibre 3132 is comprised of 245 parts with two balance wheels and a balance-spring assembly on the same axis, making the watch extremely precise and stable. Not only is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked an aesthetically pleasing timepiece; it’s a mechanical masterpiece as well.
Iconic Timepieces: Great Value for Money
Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time
The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time is a reinterpretation of an iconic watch, combining the elegance of the original Overseas with the functionality of a modern GMT watch. The first Overseas was released around the same time as two other iconic timepieces: the Patek Philippe Nautilus and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Both of those watches were created in response to the quartz crisis to some extent. The Vacheron Constantin Overseas is no exception. However, while the other two are products of legendary watch designer Gerald Genta, the Overseas is not. Jörg Hysek is the man behind the original Overseas concept. The newer models clearly have the same design DNA, but as mentioned above, they have some additional useful features. In addition to GMT hands, the new Overseas features an AM/PM indicator and a date function at 6 o’clock. This is truly the perfect travel watch for modern times.
