What watch are you currently wearing?
A Panerai Luminor PAM 00176.
How did you come to own this watch?
I bought it from a dealer on Chrono24 in August 2011, about 8 months after I started working at Chrono24. I had never really had much interest in watches before, but it took almost no time for my enthusiasm to grow… and then I wanted to have a few of my own.
Why did you decide on this watch?
I’ve always liked Panerai watches – not only for their size, but also their simple, clean and exciting designs. Since I was on a budget, I was waffling between the Luminor Base and the Panerai 312. In the end, I ended up going for the tidy dial instead of the complication, and I couldn’t be happier.
What do you like most about the Panerai Luminor?
For me, it’s the perfect combination of comfort, versatility, and a simple yet interesting design.
Despite its size, the Luminor is remarkably light. I hardly notice it on my wrist when I wear it on a leather strap. I often change the band, and I’m grateful that it’s so easy to do with this watch. It can have a completely different look in under a minute. When I need something sportier, I put on a canvas strap. For swimming, I change to a rubber strap, while for more formal events, I prefer leather straps in various colors and styles. I also like the clean, minimalist dial. Other small details like the large crown protector, make this watch something special and unique.
What role does this watch play in your collection?
I’ve since bought other watches from other brands as well. However, the Panerai was my first watch and, therefore, it’ll probably never leave my collection.
What fascinates you about watches in general?
For me, the more I learned about watches, the more I wanted to know. It’s such a massive universe full of technology, design, style, and history. I had no interest in watches 10 years ago. Now, I can recognize many references at first glance and I always look at men’s wrists to see what they’re wearing. A watch can say a lot about its owner, and it’s also a bottomless well of conversation when you meet a like-minded person. No matter how much you know, there’s always something new and interesting to discover in the depths of the watch world. That’s what makes it so special to me.
What watch is your “grail watch?”
There are two watches at the top of my list, and I’m not sure I can decide between the two. One is the Panerai 382 Bronzo, but sadly that’s out of my price range. The other is the Rolex Daytona 116500LN with a white dial, which costs about the same as the Panerai.
